Paid research studies and user testing: the best pay per hour

Some links below are referral links. If you sign up through one, we may earn a bonus at no cost to you. How we make money

If surveys feel like working for pennies, this is the upgrade. Researchers and product teams pay real money to hear from real people. The catch is that gigs are less frequent and you have to get picked.

User testing: get paid to think out loud

UserTesting pays you to use a website or app while recording your screen and talking through what you think. New testers often start with small sample tests, then move up to regular unmoderated tests (around $10 each), and live, moderated sessions pay more, often $30 and up, and usually need a webcam. Payment goes to PayPal about a week after the test.

Tip: keep talking, follow instructions exactly, and be specific. Your rating decides how many tests you're offered.

Paid research interviews

Amazon Mechanical Turk

MTurk is a marketplace of small online tasks called HITs: surveys, data entry, transcription, and more. It can pay better than typical beer money sites, but you have to be picky. Some tips from experienced r/beermoney users:

How to get picked more often

  1. Fill out your profiles completely, including job title, industry, and the devices and apps you use. That's how you match studies.
  2. Answer screeners honestly. Researchers verify, and lying gets you removed.
  3. Check often. Good studies fill fast.
  4. Have a quiet spot and a working mic and camera ready for live sessions.

Is it worth it?

For pay per hour, nothing else on our list comes close. Expect it to be occasional, not daily. Sign up for two or three, keep your profiles current, and treat each study you land as a bonus.
