How much can you really make with beer money apps?
Some links below are referral links. If you sign up through one, we may earn a bonus at no cost to you. How we make money
Short answer: for most people, somewhere between a few dollars and a hundred-ish dollars a month, depending on how much you spend anyway and how much time you put in. Anyone promising rent money from apps is selling something.
Rough monthly ranges by type
These are ballpark figures for a typical US user. Your results depend on location, demographics, spending, and time.
| Type | Effort | Typical monthly |
|---|---|---|
| Cashback sites (Rakuten, TopCashback) | Almost none | Depends on what you buy online; can be the biggest earner around holidays |
| Receipt apps (Fetch, Ibotta) | Seconds per receipt | A few dollars |
| Gas cash back (Upside) | Almost none | A few dollars if you drive regularly |
| Passive apps (Honeygain and others) | None after setup | Pocket change to a few dollars per device |
| Surveys and GPT sites | Real time | A few dollars to the low tens |
| Paid studies and user testing | Occasional, scheduled | $0 most months, $30 to $100+ when you land one |
Why it adds up
No single app moves the needle. The point is stacking: a handful of set-and-forget apps that earn on things you already do, plus one or two active options for when you're bored. That's how a few dollars here and there becomes a bar tab.
A simple stacking plan
- Week one: set and forget. Install a cashback extension and a receipt app. Add Upside if you drive.
- Fill dead time. Pick one survey site (Prolific is the best use of time) or one get-paid-to site.
- Go bigger occasionally. Sign up for a user testing or research site and keep your profile current.
- Cash out regularly. Don't let balances pile up anywhere.
Two things people forget
- Taxes: in the US, earnings from these programs are generally taxable income, and some programs send a 1099 once you pass a threshold. Cashback on your own purchases is usually treated as a rebate instead. Talk to a tax professional if the numbers get meaningful.
- Your time has value. If a task pays less than about $6 an hour, skip it.
